1. Pardon?

One of my first interviews was with an independent filmmaker. It was face to face at our office. He was a cool dude, into horror movies and metal, so the conversation was really easy. We were talking about editing the film and he mentioned that it was a difficult process because he shot 30 hours of footage.

Wow, I said. I consider myself something of a film buff but I know little of how they are made. Still, 30 hours seemed like a remarkable amount of footage for a two hour movie.

“30 hours?” I asked to make sure I heard him right.

He said, “oh yeah,” in a dismissive sort of way. Not rude, but like, this was just how movies were done. I included it in the story.

I was invited to the premiere, and I went because I was really interested in the film. It was pretty good too, though I wasn’t crazy about the acting.

At the end of the film, there was a q&a session. Someone in the audience asked how many hours of footage he shot for the movie. I smirked to myself. Well, if you’d only read my story…

“13 hours,” he answered. “They said 30 in the article, but the writer got it wrong.”

    I was flummoxed.

After the q&a, I went up to the filmmaker to say hello and congratulate him. I also apologized for the misinformation.

“It’s cool, man,” he said. “No big deal.”

I still kind of hold a grudge against him for bringing it up.
