Troll
A post-Christmas Christmas party found me deep in the Great Kills section of Staten Island. It’s a maze of duplexes and shopping centers (but I prefer to call them plazas). After the party had ended, I was sent home with a half-loaf of proscuitto bread from Cangianos and headed north on Amboy Road toward home.
But along the way, I veered off course. Maybe I drank more Guinness than I...

My interview with Steve Aoki for Submerge... →
I was at a party in Vegas that Steve Aoki was going to DJ, but we left before he got on stage. It was a blast, though—my first and only time in Sin City. A mixture of DJ Oxy Cottontail, Jameson and Vegas’s ability to loosen a person’s morals helped me get over my dance-phobia a little. And so did the cute, chubby Asian woman I was grooving with.
This interview turned out OK. I...

Icing
Last Friday, my father took me to a New Jersey Devils game. We met an old friend of mine there, along with his girlfriend, whose name I can’t remember.
I became a Devils fan years ago when Rangers tickets proved to be too expensive. For $30, we were able to sit on the ice behind the Devils’ bench. I’d never seen a hockey game before, and I was instantly hooked.
Now, the Devils...

Klutz
Last night I was coming out of the bathroom when I tripped on an extention cord. It was connected to a solitary string of Christmas lights wrapped around the railing of our back deck. I hit the cord with enough force to yank it out of the socket and bending one of the metal prongs. I caught myself, before I fell forward on to the hard tiles, but when I bent down to plug the cord back into the...

Wait 10 Minutes
When I left for work yesterday, I didn’t bring a jacket. It had been near 70 the day before, and I wasn’t expecting winter to make a quick return. But there it was, in giant fluffy flakes.
I stood perplexed at the front desk of the Y and commented on the weather to the woman posted there. She agreed with me that the weather was crazy, as she probably had with the dozen or so others...

First U.S. face transplant performed in Cleveland. →
Few details about the patient have been released in advance of a news conference scheduled for today. About 80% of the patient’s face was replaced with skin and muscles harvested from a cadaver.
Zombie face.

Far North
I didn’t know what to expect when I rented Far North. I liked the cast—Michelle Yeoh (awesome), Sean Bean (fucking Boromir, bro) and Michelle Krusiec (who looked pretty on the box… and she blogs)—and I like seeing things I’ve never heard of before. It took place in the Arctic, a place I find endlessly fascinating.
The film turned out to be very dark. Yeoh and Krusiec...

My Interview with Amanda Palmer for Submerge... →
I really liked interviewing Amanda. Though I’ve always been aware of her group The Dresden Dolls, I’m not very familiar with them. However, I’ve liked what I’ve heard. We talked about her new solo project, Who Killed Amanda Palmer?. We even talked about Neil Gaiman, who wrote the text for the photo book that’s meant to accompany her record, but I wasn’t able...

Mental Holiday
I watched The Holiday today with my sister. It’s a romantic comedy that stars Jack Black, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz. She’d seen it before. I hadn’t. It was nice, though, because we haven’t had a chance to just chill out and watch a movie together.
The movie was what I expected, but pretty enjoyable. It made me think about trivial things, which is a lot better...

One Missed Call
Garbled English spat over voice mail. The person called while we were in a meeting the night before. I couldn’t make out much, but it sounded like two children had gotten into a fight, one had been suspended. This was someone claiming to be the mother of that child.
She sounded haggard. The things she was saying could have been construed as threats if they were more intelligible. “My...

Silent Bob Sings the Blues
I had just did poorly on a game show. It’s funny because I received a random message from a friend of mine in Portland who said he’d had a dream about me getting my ass handed to me on Jeopardy. This time, though, I’d failed miserably at a bizarre version of Deal or No Deal that could be played via video screen (much like Keno can be played in bars) and involved a contraption...
